The inaugural Business of Sport was held at the Sandton Convention Centre from 7- 9 June 2005. Papadi Integrated Marketing was retained by Exhibitions for Africa to assist with the Business of Sports' brand development.
Business of Sport is the new South African "Sports Sponsorship" and "Associated
Marketing Activities" exhibition. Collocated with Markex & World
of Events, the exhibition will run at the Sandton Convention Centre in
Johannesburg for the first time.
Between 7-9 June 2005, this event will turn the South African marketing industry
on its head - by exposing key decision makers in marketing, advertising, promotion
and business to the vast number of high-profile, profitable, promotional opportunities
that sport and sport sponsorship affords them.
This new, action-packed Business of Sport exhibition will demonstrate the true
value of sports-associated sponsorship and marketing activities by showcasing
the local and international sporting teams, products, services and spaces that
can now be used to promote, enhance and grow a business and brand.
The total South African sponsorship industry
spend was R3 234 billion
The sport sponsorship market increased to R1 772 billion in direct spend
This amounted to 11,8% of total advertising and promotional spend
Growth in sport sponsorship spend in 2003 on 2002 was 18,7%
The average growth rate in sponsorships has been 11,7% per annum since
1987
So the timing for such an event couldn't be better. Worldwide, sports sponsorships
and associated activities are growing at a significantly faster rate than traditional
above-the-line advertising and media spend. And, as South African decision
makers begin to recognise the value of using sport to create positive, real-life
experiences of their brand amongst consumers, so a growing number of local
companies are putting such activities at the core of their communications strategies
- to maximize media exposure, raise brand awareness, gain mind share, create
loyalty and, most importantly, quantifiably generate revenue, improve bottom
line growth and increase shareholder wealth. Corporate social responsibility
and upliftment programs are also beginning to play an increasingly important
role in business and sport presents a natural backdrop for these.
Add to this the fact that South Africa now has a record of successfully hosting
some of the world's biggest sporting events not only well, but in a way that
has exceeded international expectations, and it becomes clear that an exhibition
of this nature is well overdue. The African Cup of Nations, Rugby and Cricket
World Cups and President's Cup have all presented opportunities for local businesses
to take advantage of global sponsorship and marketing exposure through sports-related
activities, but these were never maximized. With the 2010 Soccer World Cup
next on the cards, local businesses already have their sites set on making
the most of the event and the race is now on to identify the numerous sporting
sponsorship and marketing opportunities that exist around it.
The market is waiting to be tapped. Business of Sport will enable
the local and international sporting industry to do just this.
